You’re not the only one dealing with this

A burst pipe, a soaked carpet, a stain spreading across the ceiling. It can happen in any home in the Salt Lake Valley, and it rarely happens at a convenient time.

You don’t need to know what kind of contractor to call or what the repair will involve. Tell the provider what you’re seeing and ask them to walk you through your options.

Calling doesn’t commit you to anything. Ask questions, including about any fees, and decide what’s right for your home.

What to Do Right Now

First, make sure everyone is safe. If water may have reached outlets, appliances or wiring, stay out of that area and don’t touch anything electrical. If you smell gas, leave right away and call 911 from outside. Then, if it’s safe, try these steps before or after you call.

  1. Shut off the main water valve if you can do so safely.
  2. Turn off power to wet areas, but only if it’s safe to reach the breaker.
  3. Take photos and video of the damage for your insurance company.
  4. Move valuables and furniture away from standing water.
  5. Call us to get connected with a local restoration provider.

Answers for the first hour

When water shows up where it shouldn’t, here are answers to the questions that often come up first.

Is it safe to stay in my home right now?

It depends on where the water is. If it may have reached outlets, appliances or wiring, stay out of that area and don’t touch switches or plugs. Only shut off power at the breaker if you can reach it without standing in water. If you smell gas, see a sagging ceiling, or notice sparks, leave right away without flipping any switches. Once you’re a safe distance away, call 911, or your gas company if you smell gas. Avoid contact with water that may contain sewage. When in doubt, step outside and make your calls from there.

Should I start cleaning up on my own?

Small, safe steps help: shut off the water if you can, move valuables, and take photos. For bigger jobs, like soaked carpet, wet drywall or water in the basement, it’s usually wise to talk with your insurer and a restoration professional before you tear anything out, especially if you plan to file a claim.

What should I have ready when I call?

Nothing special. A rough idea of what happened is enough: where the water came from, which rooms are affected, and about how long things have been wet. Photos are helpful later, but you don’t need them to call.

How long does drying usually take?

It depends on how much water there is, what got wet and how long it sat. A provider can give you a better estimate after seeing the damage, and it’s a good question to ask when you call.

Does homeowners insurance cover water damage?

Sudden and accidental damage, like a burst pipe, is often covered by homeowners insurance. Damage from flooding, such as rising water from outside, usually requires separate flood insurance. Check your policy or call your insurer to confirm.

Is there a fee to call?

No. Calling and being connected are free. Restoration work itself is billed by the provider. Providers set their own pricing, so ask for a written estimate before any work begins.

Who will I be talking to?

Your call is routed to an independent water damage restoration provider in our network that serves the Salt Lake City area. We are a referral service and do not perform the work ourselves.
